Procedural Terrain in a Few Clicks by Anon_3465Vote
I am working as a CG Artist and it's really hard to work on building a complete environment in Unity 3D from scratch. And that too when we are looking into creating open world large environments based on multiple instances of vegetation. That's when I heard about GAIA from one of my colleagues and I immediately downloaded it to experience the features. To my surprise this was beyond my expectations to any world builder or terrain generator.

I follow the basic documentation found inside the asset folder and within less than a 7 minutes. I was able to generate a beautiful landscape environment with trees, flowers, water, and that too optimized. The batches were really stable without even approaching any kind of optimization. But when we add up a little bit tweaking and stuff, we are good to go!

I have now planned to start learning GAIA completely and then continue using it for my workflow. Most of time, I have to create environments for mobile games and by the use of this incredible unity asset, my job becomes really easy. The best part of the whole experience was the asset is compatible with many other assets like Aura Volumetric Lighting. So it's definitely going to maximize your productivity, because that's what I am feeling right now.

The GAIA interface is also easy to use, once you get aware of the spawners and the working style of GAIA. You can spawn trees, flowers, grass, textures, and even work with the built in Water systems to create beautiful lakes, oceans, and Island type environments. GAIA also comes with a Post Processing Effects stack which can be used to enhance the quality of your scene. Adjusting the lights, color intensity, and tweaking with some color correction. That's it, You have an incredible open world environment ready to be used!

Gaia is one of the best assets available for fast terrain and world generation without sacrificing quality and artistic control. Before the pros, one of the biggest con of this asset that I personally faced was a lack of good documentation and tutorial given how huge the asset is both in size and functions. There is no official scripting or part by part documentation of the asset and some of the official youtube tutorials have really bad sound quality. It makes using the complicated and deeper parts of the asset hard to understand and use. You just have to experiment and learn on your own.

Now onto the good. The initial set up and terrain creation is very simple and fast. Compatible with a lot of other great assets such as CTS, Auras and Fog Volume, you can create a beautiful scene that would take hours and days manually in just a few minutes, maximizing your productivity. Gaia uses a stamp system to create terrains and you have a preset of various stamps ranging from meadows, to plain dunes to valleys and waterfalls, that you can mix and match to create your base terrains. Then it uses spawners to spawn textures, trees and other level decoration objects that you need to place in the scene according to the spawn rules you set. You can spawn specific grass on specific slopes, trees on specific textures and other such rules. It also comes with some Water presets such as Ocean, Lake and Clear Lake that you can use in your scene. There is also a default post processing stack that makes the scene look beautiful by adjusting the lights, skyboxes, fog and tint colors.

Overall, if you are looking for a modular and procedural terrain and world or just looking for a quick randomized world according to your set of rules, Gaia is probably your best option in term of Unity.
Fast, Beautiful Terrain by Anon_2599Vote
A terrain-generation system that has a wonderful blend of procedural mathematics and manual placement. Using stamps and fiddling with a few settings, you can rough out a general shape for your terrain very quickly and easily. By setting up spawners for trees, rocks, grass, and everything else you want to spread around, you can populate that terrain with natural (and artificial) objects in a way that feel organic and visually pleasing. Textures for the terrain can be automatically applied to various altitudes and slopes- more rocky, craggy textures on steeper ground, snow textures starting at given heights, more dirt textures and no grass under the water level, etc...

This really is a beautiful tool, and it works great 99% of the time, but its best to do your terrain generation in a clean project with nothing but Gaia and your relevant assets in order to keep things to a minimal collision level. Once youve got things squared away, just export the terrain and assets into a new project- minus Gaia itself. Because its only used to generate the terrain, but the terrain itself is a completely vanilla Unity asset, Gaia doesnt actually have to be in your primary project, and it wont need to be included in your builds either.

Unfortunately, as has been mentioned, multi-tile editing is currently not supported in the most recent Gaia version, though the author is very responsive, active, and helpful, and is planning on including in the eventual 2.0 release, that release doesnt yet have a solid release date. A workaround does exist to get it to function more or less properly, but if you want a cleaner way of doing much larger terrains, you might want to look elsewhere for now. For those of you who like Gaia, be sure to check out GeNa as well, for finer control of object placement algorithms on your terrain, like dynamically constructing villages (with roads) from just a few assets and selecting a few options. Together, theyre really quite fantastic.
GAIA is a good asset but ... by Anon_1855Vote
So i bought GAIA to have some procedural created jobs for my project, the good part of using an Asset that makes it easier to put stuff where you want with some rules is a huge plus nowadays. For example think about having a 10 km2 terrain and you have to put grass, it would take you countless hours to put them where you wanted manually.

With procedural generation you define some rules like height and curve that it will not generate grass (to avoid having grass on your rocks which is unnatural), you place your grass texture, and you press a button, and boom you have your grass where you want.

Gaia took it a step further, you can now have any prefabs and even Villages created the same way! So think about setting the rules about where you want to put your rocks, trees, houses, even enemies and you spawn them with a press of a button!

To the basics, Gaia uses a heightmap and you go from there, generating the size of the terrain, the height, the basic textures and then you start placing your objects and even wind/water effects.

So why not 5 stars on this?

When i purchased this Asset i saw the description about not supporting tiles yet, but i didnt paid much attention, i was too exciting using this asset, until i started wanting larger terrains, and more open world stuff for my game. Then i found MapMagic world generator and understood the importance of having tiles on your project, you can work on a huge open world map that way which is not possible on Gaia (at least if you dont have a monster of a system).

So until we see the version 2 which will include tiles i m giving this excellent other than that asset a 4 star.

Enjoy!
Incredible Terrains in just 10 minutes by Anon_145Vote
If you need or use terrains in any capacity you need this asset. It is so good everyone should buy it. It is incredible value for the features it offers.

I have always avoided Terrains, the standard Unity tools are clunky at best and it takes forever to get even average results. In the past have toyed with other assets like Terrain Composer and Relief Terrain Package but they are incredibly complicated and have such a steep learning curve. Resorted to trying pre-made terrains made by others but even then still need to populate them which is time consuming. Last resort was going to be use pre-made entire scenes from assets like Big Environment Pack.

That was before Gaia arrived. Never got around to using the 1.0 release which was incredible enough but the first update which was so huge version number jumped to 1.5 added so much extra it is almost unbelievable. Following the Quick start guide I had a 2km by 2km Island terrain fully procedurally generated in just 10 minutes. This wasn't just a simple terrain, it was incredibly detailed, fully populated with trees, grasses, flowers and even with default options looked AAA. If you have additional assets like Tengoku with one click the quality goes up another notch if that was possible. Add Distingo and again in 1 click go up another level. Such is the impact Gaia has had on the Unity community there are now several assets with built in support for it. The author has also got some trial versions of the best grasses, rocks, trees and even buildings from other asset authors such that no other assets are really needed. If you buy it these trial assets can be freely used in released games. The forum thread for the asset is amazing and well worth reading the 90+ pages already in it. The amount of collaboration Gaia has generated is amazing.

The default options are so good not really played with custom set-up but the options available are vast. You can import existing terrains, smooth, merge, mask, rotate terrains. You can tweak the procedural generation is so many ways for hills, mountains, valleys, rivers, plains, etc. You can generate custom spawners and run them at any time. Whatever you want to do you can probably do. The only possible downside and this is already being planed is the ability to work with multiple terrains to create massive environments.

The only problem with Gaia is once you start using it you will fall in love with Terrains and keep generating them. You will just wander around them admiring the scenery.
You can add a review to this game asset and send it to approval (you can edit it later)
